Overview

MiCA CASP authorisation in the Czech Republic

MiCA CASP licence documents for the Czech Republic in a folder with the Czech flag and the MAXCORP logo

The Czech National Bank (CNB) authorises crypto-asset service providers under the EU MiCA Regulation (EU) 2023/1114 and the Czech Act No. 31/2025 Coll. on the Digitalisation of the Financial Market. The trade licence for virtual-asset services has been abolished and the Czech transitional period ended on 1 July 2026, so crypto-asset services now require a MiCA authorisation.

  • A Czech authorisation covers your crypto-asset services across the EU/EEA by notification

  • The Czech National Bank is the competent authority for MiCA and supervises licensed CASPs

  • Czech law keeps client crypto-assets out of a CASP’s insolvency estate

  • The licence is held by a Czech company, which we can set up for you as part of the project

  • Own funds can be paid in any currency and must be in place when you file the application

  • Plan from about 6 months, longer if the file needs supplementing

The Czech National Bank has said it looks for a real business with a transparent ownership structure and financing, run from the Czech Republic, and that applications built on virtual addresses or aimed mainly at other markets fall short. We prepare the application, set up the Czech company, its governance and AML framework, and file it with the CNB. Licence, company and compliance come from one team.

Coverage

Which crypto business fits a Czech CASP licence?

Czech applicants are often former trade-licence providers or groups building a Central European base. What you offer clients fixes your MiCA class, and with it the own funds to show on the filing day.

Former trade-licence provider

Class 1 to 3

You need: to continue after the Czech trade licence for virtual-asset services was abolished and the transition closed.

The Czech Republic gives you: a CNB authorisation scoped to what you really do today, so the capital and controls fit the business.

Advisory or order desk

Class 1

You need: to advise clients on crypto-assets or route and execute their orders, without safekeeping.

The Czech Republic gives you: the lowest MiCA class, with €50,000 in own funds, valid for clients in every EU/EEA state.

Exchange with safekeeping

Class 2

You need: to convert crypto into koruna, euro or other crypto-assets and look after clients’ holdings.

The Czech Republic gives you: the middle MiCA class, with €125,000 in own funds and client holdings ring-fenced by Czech law.

Multilateral trading

Class 3

You need: to run a venue that brings together the buy and sell interests of many users.

The Czech Republic gives you: the top MiCA class, with €150,000 in own funds and the controls a supervised venue requires.

The Czech National Bank wants the own funds in place on the day you file, not only at licensing. The MiCA class minimums apply, or a quarter of the past year’s fixed overheads if larger; capital, insurance or both can cover them.

  • Class 1€50,000Advice, orders, transfers
  • Class 2€125,000With safekeeping and exchange
  • Class 3€150,000With a trading venue

Why choose the Czech Republic for your MiCA licence?

The Czech Republic adds strong client-asset protection to MiCA, with a central bank that checks for a real business. For a crypto firm with genuine operations in Central Europe, that is a licence clients and partners can trust.

  • Client assets protected by law

Client crypto-assets and money held by a Czech CASP stay outside its insolvency estate and are returned to clients.

  • Central bank supervision

The Czech National Bank authorises and supervises CASPs, alongside banks, investment firms and payment institutions.

  • MiCA review deadlines

Up to 25 working days for the completeness check and 40 for the decision, with a pause of up to 20 working days for questions.

  • Passport across the EU

The CNB forwards your passport notification to the host states within 10 working days; no special form is required.

Timeline

MiCA CASP authorisation in the Czech Republic: phase-by-phase timeline

Allow at least 6 months, and more if the CNB asks for additions. The bank applies the MiCA terms, but it has said that supplementing a file can restart them, so a complete first filing saves the most time.

1. Groundwork

Company, people and capital first.

Decide the class, register the Czech company, appoint managers, pay in the own funds and draft the programme of operations and policies.

~2 to 4months

CNB: Own funds must be met and documented on the day you file, for example with a bank statement.

Ready before filing

The CNB checks these from day one.

  • Programme of operations
  • Capital proof and ownership chart
  • AML and IT security rules

2. Submission

Into the CNB data box.

The signed file goes to the CNB through its data box, the administrative fee is paid, and the completeness check begins.

~1 to 2months

MiCA terms: Up to 25 working days for the completeness check under MiCA.

Checked for completeness

Gaps here restart the clock.

  • All EU template sections
  • Files on managers and owners
  • Safekeeping and complaints rules

3. CNB review

The bank tests the business behind the file.

The CNB examines managers and owners, capital, internal control, AML and sanctions, IT security, safekeeping and whether the business truly runs from the Czech Republic.

~2 to 4months

In practice: Questions from the CNB pause the clock, and adding to the file can restart it.

Common follow-ups

Areas the CNB often asks about.

  • Source of the capital
  • Real operations in the Czech Republic
  • Outsourced functions

4. Licence & passporting

Live in the Czech Republic, then across the EU.

Begin operating and tell the CNB which other EU/EEA countries you will serve.

6+months total

Passporting note: The CNB forwards the notification within 10 working days; services can start by the 15th calendar day after notifying.

After the licence

Ongoing duties to the CNB.

  • Own funds and client‑asset safeguards
  • Yearly auditor check of custody
  • Audited annual accounts to the CNB

* Our estimate including preparation. The legal terms run only from a complete application, and the CNB can restart them when the file is supplemented.

Requirements

What does the Czech National Bank require for a CASP licence?

The CNB grants the licence to a real Czech business, not a postbox. It reviews the people in charge, where the capital comes from and how the company will operate day to day.

Company and substance

The CASP is a Czech company (usually an s.r.o. or a.s.) with its registered office in the Czech Republic, effective management in the EU and at least one director resident in the EU.

  • Only legal persons can apply
  • A real business, not a virtual address or a company aimed mainly at other markets
  • Transparent ownership and financing

Application file

Built on the EU templates for CASP authorisation; the CNB has no separate forms. Expect to provide:

  • A programme of operations explaining the business model
  • Repute and experience evidence for managers and owners
  • A bank statement or accounts proving the own funds
  • Internal governance and risk controls
  • Money laundering, sanctions and Travel Rule rules
  • IT security, continuity, safekeeping and complaints

Proceedings at the CNB are in Czech; documents in other languages may need a certified translation.

Own funds

Whichever is larger: the class minimum or a quarter of last year’s fixed overheads, held from the filing day:

  • Class 1 at €50,000: advice, orders, execution, placing, transfers, portfolio management
  • Class 2 at €125,000: everything in Class 1 with safekeeping and exchange
  • Class 3 at €150,000: everything in Class 2 with a trading venue

AML and supervision

CASPs are obliged persons under the Czech AML Act, with the Financial Analytical Office (FAU) as the financial intelligence unit.

  • An AML contact person notified to the FAU, able to deal with it in Czech or Slovak
  • Customer due diligence, sanctions lists and monitoring of transactions
  • Originator and beneficiary data on crypto transfers (Travel Rule)
  • Yearly auditor check of client-asset safeguards for custody

FAQ

MiCA CASP licence in the Czech Republic: FAQ

Who grants MiCA licences in the Czech Republic?

The Czech National Bank (CNB), the competent authority under Act No. 31/2025 Coll. on the Digitalisation of the Financial Market. It also supervises licensed CASPs.

Is the old Czech trade licence for crypto still valid?

No. The trade licence for virtual-asset services has been abolished, and the Czech transitional period for former providers ended on 1 July 2026. Crypto-asset services now need a MiCA authorisation.

How much does a Czech CASP licence cost?

A full application with us starts from €80,000 (Platinum), and a Gold readiness audit from €15,000. Not included: the CZK 20,000 administrative fee, your own funds (€50,000 to €150,000), the Czech company and translations. Contact us for a detailed estimate.

How long does the licence take?

Plan from about 6 months including preparation, and longer if the file needs supplementing. Under MiCA the CNB has up to 25 working days to check completeness and 40 to decide; questions pause the clock, and the CNB has said adding to the file can restart it.

What own funds does the CNB expect?

The MiCA minimum for your class: €50,000, €125,000 or €150,000, or a quarter of last year’s fixed overheads if larger. Unusually, the CNB wants them in place and evidenced when you file, for a new company with a bank statement; any currency is accepted.

Does the application have to be in Czech?

Proceedings at the Czech National Bank are in Czech, and documents in another language may need a certified Czech translation unless the CNB waives it. We prepare the Czech versions with you.

Does the company need people in the Czech Republic?

MiCA requires effective management in the EU and at least one director resident in the EU. The CNB has also said it looks for a real business run from the Czech Republic, not a virtual address. We can set up the Czech company and source the people.

How are client assets protected?

Czech law keeps client crypto-assets, the means of access to them and client money held by a CASP outside its insolvency estate; they are returned to clients. A CASP that provides custody must also have an auditor check its safeguards every year.

Can a Czech bank or EMI offer crypto services?

Banks, investment firms and other financial entities licensed by the CNB can notify it 40 working days before starting instead of applying for a CASP licence. An EMI may only offer custody and transfer services for the e-money tokens it issues itself.

Can I passport a Czech CASP licence?

Yes. Tell the CNB in which EU/EEA countries you plan to operate; no special form is required. It forwards your notification within 10 working days, and you may start there no later than the 15th calendar day after you notified.

What AML rules apply?

A Czech CASP is an obliged person under the Czech AML Act. It must notify the Financial Analytical Office of its AML contact person, identify and verify clients, check sanctions, monitor transactions, report suspicious ones and apply the Travel Rule to crypto transfers.

Do you help with compliance after authorisation?

Yes. The Czech CASP keeps the responsibility, and we can supply an outsourced MLRO or compliance officer, an AML team for onboarding checks, regulatory reporting support and DORA IT risk work. Browse all compliance services.
